Come & Try Sessions

We are fortunate to have an accredited coach to ensure that your archery experience is not only fun, but rewarding too. By learning the correct way to shoot you will find that hitting the gold on the target becomes easier every day. We can coach you in recurve, compound and longbow!

The “Come and Try” course is a prerequisite to be able to shoot on our archery range. All new members must complete the Come and Try course and achieve a minimum level of proficiency before being allowed to shoot on the range without supervision.

The minimum age for the Come and Try Course is 10 years.

Try Archery sessions are run on Saturdays, starting at 11:00am and finishing at 12:30pm at our range at Duram Park, 200 Buckley Road, Lake Gillear. See the Come & Try under the Events section on our Home Page.

There is no charge for coaching or equipment hire, your first three sessions are free! Also, there is no need to book, just turn up on the day but please make sure you have appropriate footwear. You will be unable to shoot if you have open toed shoes.

Indoor Range Refurbishment

We have finally finished the update and re-configuration of the target butts on the indoor range. All targets are now mounted on the back wall and at last we have 5 metres behind the shooting line. A new shooting line has been marked at 18m and we still have 4 targets that can be wheeled out to allow shooting from 10m.

Those members that we haven’t seen for a while, please come on down and have a shoot. We hope all our members are happy with the changes and enjoy the new range. A huge thank you goes out the John Taylor, Adam Guilfoyle from the small bore rifle club and club member Alex Nesic for all their hard work in getting this done.

Spring Indoor 2019 Rnd 1 & Rnd 2

Archers of Warrnambool made history tonight, by running round 1 and round 2 of it’s very first indoor league. Comprising 2 rounds of 30 arrows, Australian Indoor 18m, 12 archers took part in the first of many events at this ever strengthening club.
Nine local members were joined by 3 hardy shooters from Greater Hamilton Archery. Brendan and Deb Jones and Marshall Mott all made the 70 minutes journey to Allansford to help foster greater relationships with other archery clubs around the Western Victoria / SE Sth Australia region.

GHA lived up to their reputation as one of the strongest clubs in the region by posting competitive scores in all three divisions.
GHA’s Brendan Jones was the standout archer on the night, posting scores of 291 and 292, with  our own Elliot “the Hammer” Riley a very close second.

The Hammer was his usual consistent self with two rounds of 289. Daniel Baker, (265 & 272) and Dave Reid (263 & 270) made up the final two archers in the A grade division.

In B Grade, our own Jesse Sellens (compound) leads the way, closely followed by GHA’s Marshall Mott (compound) and Deb Jones (barebow recurve), with Doctor Charlotte (recurve) hot on their heels.

In front of the C Grade  division is Chelsea Theobald-Daly shooting her Hoyt hunting bow with Denise Burrell and Gerry Mahony with their sighted recurves making up second and third place respectively and Paul Ryan in fourth with his barebow recurve.

Special mention needs to be made of Paul, who tonight was shooting a bow for only the third time in his life. He accounted for himself well, posting 2 respectable scores given his level of experience. If he continues to improve at his current level, he will be a very competitive archer within a relatively short time. Well done Paul, keep at it mate, you’re doing well.

Scores for Round 1 and Round 2 of our Spring Indoor League are;

Archer Division Rnd 1 Rnd 2
Brendan Jones A Grade 291 292

Club Shoot 03-08-2019

The future of the club was on display today with a huge contingent of young archers at our Come and Try session today.

We had over 20 shooters all starting out or returning from last week. We had so many in fact that we almost ran out of bows! Of the 20 new shooters, only 3 were adults, with the remaining 17 all aged between 8 and 13 years old. Hopefully we can engage those young shooters enough to get hooked on archery and maybe then drag mum and dad  into the sport too. We certainly have plenty of father and son combinations at AoW as well as mums and daughters.
Everyone seemed to have a good time at our newly refurbished indoor range, and with super coach Mike Clark absent today, the coaching duties fell on the shoulders of Dave Reid to try to teach what he is unable to do himself. 😂😂😂 Dave couldn’t hit water if he was standing in the middle of a lake using a recurve bow, he’s absolutely hopeless.
Having said that, the session went off without a hitch, no one was injured, and all stated that they would be back again next week.

So if you’re thinking about giving archery a go, come along to the Come and Try session next Saturday August 10 at the new starting time of 11am
